Bringing Families and
Futures Together
Canada strongly believes in family reunification. Through the Family Sponsorship Program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor certain family members to live with them in Canada permanently.
Who Can You Sponsor?
Through family sponsorship, you can sponsor:
- Your spouse, common-law or conjugal partner
- Your dependent children
- Your parents or grandparents
In rare circumstances, you may also be able to sponsor other relatives if you have no close family in Canada or abroad.
Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorship
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to immigrate to Canada.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, you must:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Your relationship must be genuine and legally recognized.
- You must not be receiving social assistance (unless for a disability).
- You must commit to financially supporting your spouse/partner for 3 years.
Inland Sponsorship
Your partner is already living with you in Canada.
Outland Sponsorship
Your partner is living outside Canada
Inland applicants may also be eligible for an open work permit while their application is being processed.
Child Sponsorship
You can sponsor your biological or adopted children to become permanent residents of Canada if they meet the definition of a dependent child.
Who is considered a dependent child?
- Children under 22 years old who are not married or in a common-law relationship.
- Children 22 years or older who are financially dependent due to a physical or mental condition (and have been dependent since before age 22).
You must prove your relationship to the child and agree to financially support them for a set period.
Parent or Grandparent Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents or grandparents to immigrate to Canada. This program operates on a limited intake basis and often involves a lottery selection.
Who is considered a dependent child?
- You must submit an interest to sponsor form when IRCC opens intake.
- You must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the past 3 years (based on family size).
- You must commit to financially supporting your parent or grandparent for 20 years.
If not selected, your family member may be eligible for a Super Visa, which allows them to visit Canada for up to 5 years at a time.
